Title

how
pseudoscience
affects
the
practice
and
perception
of
clinical
psychology
Publisher

Resource Type

Notes
In its
beginnings
,
psychology
was
grounded
in
objective
scientific
reasoning
. As
psychological
principles
became
applied
in
clinical
settings
,
scientific
approaches
gave
way
to
subjective
interpretations
of
human
behavior
.
Today
, a
significant
number
of
practitioners
make
decisions
using
anecdotal
evidence
or
“intuition”
.
Such
decisions
are
based
on
pseudoscientific
belief
systems
rooted
in
scientific
illiteracy
, an
unwillingness
to have
beliefs
falsified
, and the
allure
of
“pop
psychology”
. To
improve
clinical
outcomes
,
practitioners
should
use
evidence-based
approaches
founded
upon
scientific
reasoning
. In this
thesis
,
I
propose
suggestions
for
educating
the
general
public
and
practitioners
about
the
importance
of
evidence-based
approaches
to
clinical
practice
.
