Notes
The
American
poet
Wallace
Stevens
,
who
published
poetry
from
1923-1954
,
is
often
perceived
as an
exemplary
figure
in the
tradition
of
American
modernist
poetry
.
However
, this
label
seems
inadequate
in
describing
Stevens’s
work
,
particularly
, his
later
work
–
which
appears
as
much
more
philosophically
grounded
than the
work
of his
mid-century
peers
.
Stevens
writes
poetry
during
a
period
of
time
in
world
history
where
a
growing
sense
of
alienation
results
from the
social
conditions
caused
by
industrialization
and the
horrors
of
World
Wars
I
and
II
.
While
there are
several
iterations
of
alienation
present
within
the
literature
of the
early
1920s
through
the
1950s
,
Stevens
addresses
the
growing
sense
of
alienation
by
writing
poetry
that
aims
at
orienting
his
readers
to their
being
through
poetic
language
.
Adopting
a
more
philosophical
approach
to
poetry
concerning
the
nature
of
being
,
Stevens’
remarks
:
“I
think
that his
function
is
to
make
his
imagination
theirs
and that he
fulfills
himself
only
as he
sees
his
imagination
become
the
light
in the
minds
of
others
. His
role
in
short
is
to
help
people
live
their
lives”
(The
Necessary
Angel
29)
.
Stevens’
perception
of the
poet’s
role
as
helping
“people
live
their
lives”
contributes
to an
overall
understanding
of
Stevens’
poetry
of
being
.
