Title
Toward
the
development

Notes
After
more
than
half
a
century
of
decline
,
commuter
rail
transportation
in the
United
States
has been
experiencing
a
revival
. This
study
examines
a
region
in
central
Connecticut
to
determine
the
best
locations
for a
new
commuter
rail
line
.
Even
though
the
railroad
infrastructure
exists
, a
section
of the
line
between
Hartford
and
New
Britain
has been
reserved
for a
busway
, a
project
that
involves
paving
over
the
existing
tracks
. This
blocks
cities
west
of
New
Britain
who
will
like
to have
rail
access
to
Hartford
.
Therefore
, an
alternate
rail
path
must
be
located
to
connect
the
entire
region
. This
study
uses
Geographic
Information
Systems
(GIS)
to
analyze
the
physical
and
demographic
factors
that are
considered
important
in
locating
a
new
rail
service
. These
data
were
collected
for the
study
area
and
entered
into the
GIS
in
raster
format
.
Each
factor
was
rated
on a
standard
binary
suitability
scale
of 0 to
255
, with 0
being
the
least
suitable
and
255
being
the
most
suitable
.
Each
factor
was then
assigned
a
weight
based
on its
relative
importance
to
every
other
factor
using
a
pairwise
comparison
matrix
. The
multicriteria
evaluation
(MCE)
function
was
run
, and the
result
was a
raster
image
of the
study
area
,
showing
the
areas
suitable
for
railroad
transportation
, with the
same
standard
suitability
scale
of 0 to
255
. An
analysis
of the
raster
image
revealed
an
alternate
path
of
suitability
for
locating
a
new
commuter
rail
link
from
downtown
New
Britain
,
through
Central
Connecticut
State
University
,
Westfarms
Mall
,
West
Hartford
Center
, and on to
downtown
Hartford
.
