Abstract
This
exploratory
study
examined
the
psychometric
properties
of, and
relationship
between
,
two
scales
: The
Criminogenic
Thinking
Profile
(CTP)
and the
Belief
Scale
. The
CTP
is
an
instrument
designed
to
assess
thought
patterns
associated
with
criminal
behaviors
and
lifestyles
,
while
the
Belief
Scale
is
an
instrument
designed
to
assess
negative
thinking
patterns
common
in
individuals
seeking
outpatient
psychotherapy
. The
researcher
administered
both
scales
to
199
undergraduate
criminology
students
in
order
to
explore
the
factorial
structure/validity
of the
Belief
Scale
and
reliability
of
both
instruments
. The
researcher
expected
to
find
support
for the
proposed
10-factor
structure
and
acceptable
internal
consistency
of the
Belief
Scale
and
excellent
internal
consistency
of the
CTP
. The
present
study
yielded
only
four
of the
expected
10
components
.
However
, this
research
did
provide
further
support
for the
reliability
of the
Belief
Scale
and
CTP
as
expected
.
Additionally
, this
research
explored
the
relationship
between
criminal
thinking
and
irrational
beliefs
. As the
CTP
was the
first
criminal
thinking
instrument
to
incorporate
a
component
of
irrational
beliefs
(e.g
. the
inability
to
overcome
obstacles/tendency
to
surrender
when
challenged)
, the
researcher
expected
to
reveal
significant
correlations
between
the
instruments’
total
scores
, as
well
as
between
the
Inability
to
Cope
CTP
subscale
and
Belief
Scale
total
score
. This
study
uncovered
significant
positive
moderate
correlations
in
both
of these
instances
.
Furthermore
,
regression
analyses
emphasized
the
relative
importance
of the
Inability
to
Cope
CTP
subscale
in
explaining
variation
in
Belief
Scale
total
scores
. This
research
demonstrates
the
link
between
criminal
and
irrational
thinking
and has
implications
for
clinical
settings
that
service
offenders
,
providing
more
support
for the
use
of
cognitive-behavioral
therapies
in
offending
populations
.
