Title
Music
and
achievement
in
mathematics
:
is
there a
connection
?
Publisher

Resource Type
Master's Thesis
Notes
Purpose
The
purpose
of this
research
was to
explore
a
possible
connection
between
students’
involvement
in
formal
music
activities
and their
achievement
in
mathematics
.
Hypothesis
Students
who
have
more
exposure
to
music
as
measured
through
the
accrual
of
music
credits
and
other
formal
training
will
score
higher
on the
Mathematics
portion
of the
Connecticut
Academic
Performance
Test
(CAPT)
.
Statement
of
Need
It
is
clear
that
improving
how
we
educate
the
next
generation
is
important
to
our
future
.
Success
in
mathematics
is
vital
to
students
who
intend
to
pursue
higher
education
and the
career
opportunities
higher
education
offers
. In a
policy
brief
published
by
Achieve
(2008)
, a
national
organization
created
by
prominent
business
leaders
, the
authors
identified
mathematics
as a
fundamental
building
block
for
future
success
in
college
and a
student’s
career
beyond
.
Many
individuals
and
organizations
have
made
attempts
to
improve
education
through
overhauls
of
curriculum
,
advocacy
for
alternative
teaching
strategies
,
research
on
teaching
and
learning
, the
creation
of
specialized
schools
, and
other
methods
. This
study
is
not an
attempt
to
explore
or
justify
any
such
major
changes
,
rather
an
attempt
to
explore
another
factor
that
may
impact
student
achievement
.
While
all
of the
above
factors
influence
the
success
of
our
educational
system
, there are
surely
a
variety
of
less
obvious
factors
that also
impact
student
success
. This
study
is
an
attempt
to
explore
one
such
factor
:
involvement
in
formal
musical
activities
and how this
impacts
student
achievement
in
mathematics
. If there
is
a
connection
,
whether
or not that
connection
is
causative
or
correlational
,
deepening
our
understanding
of this
connection
can
only
benefit
future
educators
as they
endeavor
to
instill
a
strong
understanding
of
mathematics
in the
next
generation
.
