hero's
welcome

Abstract
American
memory
describes
the
homecomings
of
military
personnel
from
Vietnam
as a
nation
unwilling
to
support
them.
Television
and
movies
depict
the
struggle
that
American
service
men
and
women
faced
as they
found
their
way
back
to
normalcy
.
History
seems
to have
allowed
movies
to
write
the
story
of
Vietnam
veteran
homecomings
.
Veterans’
voices
are
few
and
far
between
when
attempting
to
find
the
truth
. By
examining
the
oral
histories
of
returning
Vietnam
veterans
, this
thesis’
goal
is
to
make
sense
of what
happened
as
veterans
make
the
journey
from
Vietnam
home
.
Tapping
into the
resources
of the
Veterans
History
Project
and
stories
of
many
local
servicemen
make
this
thesis
possible
. The
stories
of
homecoming
that these
veterans
tell
are the
best
way
of
finding
out
what
really
happened
when
Vietnam
veterans
came
home
.
While
many
veterans
describe
their
homecoming
as
no
big
deal
,
almost
every
veteran
who
took
part
in this
study
felt
as
though
they
deserved
something
better
. This
study
examines
how the
protest
movement
,
media
outlets
,
private
citizens
, and the
military
all
hold
some
responsibility
for the
environment
that
Vietnam
veterans
came
home
to. The
one
constellation
for this
era
of
veterans
was not how they were
treated
, but that their
experiences
make
future
generations
of
veterans’
homecoming
less
hostile
.
