Abstract
Learning
vocabulary
is
an
integral
part
of
learning
a
second
language
. The
amount
of
vocabulary
a
student
possesses
correlates
with the
student’s
performance
in
reading
and
writing
in
both
native
and
second
languages
.
Since
images
are also an
important
part
of
students’
lives
,
it
is
possible
to
assume
they
affect
the
learning
process
. The
purpose
of this
study
was to
observe
how the
use
of
images
impacts
the
learning
of
vocabulary
in the
second
language
and if in
fact
,
it
also
helps
with
vocabulary
retention
. This
study
was
conducted
with
two
classes
of
Spanish
II
with a
total
of
25
subjects
. The
study
consisted
of
using
two
different
methods
to
teach
twenty
five
words
to
two
groups
.
While
presentations
,
activities
, and
homework
were
given
to
both
groups
, the
experimental
group
learned
the
vocabulary
with
images
and the
control
group
learned
with
words
. A
pre-test
was
given
to
all
of the
subjects
. To
determine
whether
the
vocabulary
was
learned
and
retained
,
post-tests
were
given
on the
fourth
day
of the
study
and
three
weeks
after
the
experiment
was
completed
.
Two
statistical
tests
were
used
, the
Two-Sample
T-Test
and the
Paired
T-Test
. The
results
indicated
that there was not a
significant
difference
between
the
experimental
group
and the
control
group
.
Additionally
,
all
of the
subjects
display
no
significant
disparity
in
vocabulary
retention
.
However
, the
observations
gathered
during
the
study
revealed
potentially
useful
information
.
Subjects
that
learned
using
images
were
more
enthusiastic
during
the
experiment
and
expressed
that they
enjoyed
the
process
better
than
learning
with
only
words
. They also
appeared
to be
more
engaged
in
class
and
performed
better
in their
writing
assignments
. This
study
suggests
that
while
there was
no
significant
difference
in the
learning
and
retention
of
vocabulary
with the
use
of
images
,
it
enforces
positive
responses
.
Because
of these
observations
, the
study
recommends
further
studies
regarding
the
impact
of
images
on the
learning
of
vocabulary
of a
second
language
.
