Notes
Law
enforcement
agencies
have
experienced
a
steady
decline
in
qualified
applicants
from
which
to
select
and
fill
vacancies
. This
study
examined
police
officer
perceptions
of the
recruitment
and
hiring
process
. A
survey
was
conducted
with
144
Connecticut
State
Police
and
Connecticut
Police
Officer
Standard
and
Training
Council
academy
recruits
during
the
summer
of
2010
. The
survey
questions
addressed
officers’
reasons
for
pursuing
a
career
in
law
enforcement
, their
views
of the
hiring
process
, and
factors
that
influenced
their
acceptance
decisions
. The
results
of the
study
have
shown
that
recruits
entering
the
field
of
law
enforcement
chose
to
do
so
for
both
altruistic
and
practical
reasons
.
Recruits
chose
police
work
to
fulfill
their
desire
to
serve
, and
selected
the
agency
they
wished
to be
employed
with
based
on
agency
reputation
. They were also
influenced
by the
prospect
of
stable
employment
and
retirement
plan
.
Some
significant
differences
emerged
in their
responses
as a
function
of
age
and
agency
type
.
Millennial
generation
recruits
were
more
influenced
by the
adventure/excitement
of the
job
while
Generation
X
recruits
were
more
influenced
by the
security
of a
retirement
plan
.
State
police
recruits
were
more
influenced
by the
agency’s
reputation
while
local
police
recruits
were
more
likely
to
accept
employment
with the
first
agency
to
offer
them a
position
. If
law
enforcement
agencies
are to be
successful
in
attracting
the
most
qualified
candidates
, they
need
to
emphasize
the
characteristics
that are
appealing
to
applicants
such
as the
ability
to
serve
and the
agency’s
reputation
as
well
as the
potential
for
stability
and
benefits
.
