Notes
After
introducing
the
reader
to a
brief
history
of
Judaism
, this
thesis
describes
the
connection
that
Jewish
people
have with their
land
. A
premise
that
is
central
to
understanding
Jewish
history
is
the
continued
unity
of the
Jewish
nation
,
even
in the
Diaspora
. In the
half-century
since
World
War
II
, the
role
that
Jews
occupy
in
society
has
improved
, but
anti-Semitism
still
exists
. Their
shared
history
and
exposure
to
religious
hatred
has
attracted
many
Jews
to
modem
Zionism
--
the
belief
that a
Jewish
state
should
exist
in
Israel
, for
all
Jews
,
wherever
they
reside
. As the
State
of
Israel
evolves
and
prepares
to
enter
the
twenty-first
century
, its
new
Likud
government
and the
religious
right
want
to
redefine
the
reason
for the
existence
of the
State
of
Israel
and the
people
to
whom
it
belongs
. The
Jewish
religion
is
quite
diverse
,
including
Orthodox
,
Conservative
,
Reform
, and
Reconstructionist
movements
.
Each
group
maintains
its
own
traditions
,
beliefs
,
practices
,
communities
, and
rabbinical
schools
.
Conservative
,
Reform
, and
Reconstructionist
movements
are
products
of
American
Jewry
.
Adherents
to these
groups
consider
Orthodox
Judaism
to be a
reminder
of a
dead
past
.
Although
fewer
than
twenty-five
percent
of
Israeli
Jews
consider
themselves
to be
Orthodox
,
Orthodoxy
continues
to have a
strong
presence
in
Israeli
society
and
government
. The
Law
of
Return
,
which
became
effective
in
1950
,
stated
that
every
Jew
has the
right
to
emigrate
to
Israel
and
become
an
Israeli
citizen
.
Israeli
Knesset
members
did
not
define
"
Jew
" in
traditional
terms
;
instead
, they
opted
for a
broader
meaning
,
defining
a
Jew
as a
person
who
was
born
Jewish
or
who
chose
to be
Jewish
. In
1970
, the
liberal
attitude
of the
majority
of
Knesset
members
had
shifted
;
more
traditional
members
demanded
an
amendment
to the
Law
of
Return
that
further
defined
who
was
Jewish
and
who
could
enjoy
Israeli
citizenship
.
Under
this
amendment
, a
Jew
was
defined
as a
person
born
of a
Jewish
mother
, or
who
had
converted
to
Judaism
;
however
,
non-Jews
could
still
gain
Israeli
citizenship
if they were
spouses
,
children
, or
grandchildren
of
Jews
.
Under
the
current
Likud-led
coalition
government
, the
religious
right
is
trying
to
amend
the
Law
of
Return
even
further
. The
new
legislation
, if
passed
, would
give
the
Chief
Rabbinate
of
Israel
, an
Orthodox
body
, the
power
to
nullify
non-Orthodox
conversions
performed
in the
State
of
Israel
. If
passed
, this
amendment
would
create
an
immense
gulf
between
Israeli
and
Diaspora
Jewry
.
Despite
Orthodox
actions
to
amend
the
Law
of
Return
in
order
to
narrow
the
definition
of
Jews
, the
non-traditional
Jewish
community
continues
to
expand
.
Throughout
the
Diaspora
,
particularly
in the
United
States
,
many
non-Jews
are
choosing
the
Jewish
way
of
life
.
Conversions
are
based
upon
individuals’
personal
choices
, as
well
as on
intermarriage
. The
Reform
movement
has had
great
success
in its
efforts
to
proselytize
. The
non-Jewish
community
has
begun
to
realize
that there
is
one
G-D
, but
many
paths
.
