The
purpose
of this
study
,
completed
in
2007
, was to
locate
and
identify
the
surviving
Industrial
Revolution
century
factories
in the
fifteen
towns
of
Middlesex
County
,
Connecticut
and
determine
if they, as
artifacts
of
America’s
“Industrial
Revolution,”
are a
viable
resource
for
adaptive
reuse
. The
data
was
obtained
through
transits
,
interviews
and
literature
review
encompassing
municipal
,
state
and
federal
documents
,
geographic
journals
,
academic
publications
,
private
publications
and
internet
sites
.
Three
crucial
factors
of the
study
were
focused
on
determining
the
viability
of
Middlesex
County
factories
for
adaptive
reuse
,
Historic
Conservation
and
Preservation
,
Zoning
and
Ordinance
, and
most
importantly
,
Brownfield’s
Contamination
and
Remediation
. The
study
further
identifies
means
by
which
these
prime
factors
may
hinder
or
assist
communities
seeking
to
revitalize
“perception
of
place”
through
restoration
and
adaptive
reuse
of
aged
factory
buildings
.
