Abstract
Augmented
reality
is
the
concept
of
overlaying
digital
information
on
top
of the
real
worldview
.
One
application
that
makes
use
of
Augmented
Reality
is
the
Layar
Reality
Browser
,
which
shows
what
is
around
oneself
by
displaying
real
time
digital
information
layered
on
top
of the
real
world
as
seen
through
the
camera
of a
smartphone
.
Layar
works
by
using
a
combination
of the
mobile
phone’s
camera
,
compass
, and
GPS
data
to
identify
user
location
and
field
of
view
,
retrieving
data
based
on these
geo-coordinates
, and
overlaying
that
data
over
the
camera
view
. In this
project
, the
developers
use
the
Layar
technology
on the
CCSU
campus
to
provide
users
with
information
regarding
various
buildings
and their
entrances
,
when
moving
around
campus
. In
order
to
accomplish
this, the
GPS
coordinates
of
many
locations
on
campus
were
collected
and
stored
into a
database
. The
Layar
application
on the
user’s
smartphone
displays
the
points
of
interest
(POI’s)
within
the
specified
range
,
along
with
information
regarding
these
points
. This
paper
discusses
the
Layar
Reality
Browser
, its
architecture
,
server
configurations
and
presents
experimental
results
that
prove
its
overall
effectiveness
. The
results
of a
usability
survey
conducted
on
test
users
of this
application
are also
presented
.
