Title
An
investigation
into the
use
of
reasoning
and
rehabilitation
II
with
adult
probationers
Publisher
Central Connecticut State University
Date
2011
;
*
Resource Type
Special Project
Notes
Cognitive
shortcomings
are
common
traits
among
the
offender
population
.
It
is
this
deficit
in
social
reasoning
that
leads
many
individuals
to the
criminal
justice
system
. The
modification
of
such
irrational
thoughts
has been
demonstrated
to
reduce
recidivism
. The
Reasoning
and
Rehabilitation
2
(R&R2)
program
is
a
psycho-educational
intervention
based
on
cognitive-behavioral
models
that has been
found
to
produce
a
reduction
in
recidivism
. The
Office
of
Adult
Probation
in
Connecticut
utilizes
R&R2
with its
medium-risk
and
high-risk
offenders
as a
means
of
targeting
their
illogical
thought
processes
in
order
to
reduce
their
antisocial
behaviors
and
thereby
reduce
recidivism
. The
present
study
utilizes
an
existing
database
of
inactive
probation
cases
maintained
by
Connecticut’s
Court
Support
Services
Division
to
examine
the
relationship
between
R&R2
completion
and
probation
outcome
.
It
also
explores
the
association
between
completion
of
R&R2
and
probationer
ethnicity
,
age
and
gender
.
It
is
hypothesized
that
probationers
who
complete
R&R2
will be
more
likely
to
successfully
complete
probation
than
probationers
who
are
unsatisfactorily
discharged
from
R&R2
.
It
also
hypothesized
that
White
probationers
will have
higher
rates
of
program
completion
than
Black
or
Latino
probationers
.
Additionally
, the
researcher
posits
that
Latinos
will have
higher
rates
of
program
completion
than
Blacks
.
Furthermore
,
it
was
believed
that
females
would have
higher
rates
of
successful
program
completion
than
males
and that the
likelihood
of
program
success
would
increase
with
offender
age
. As
hypothesized
, the
results
indicated
a
positive
relationship
between
R&R2
completion
and
successful
probation
completion
. The
results
also
indicated
that
White
and
Latino
probationers
had
higher
rates
of
R&R2
completion
than
Black
probationers
, and that
older
probationers
were
more
likely
to
complete
R&R2
than
younger
probationers
. There were
no
significant
gender
differences
.
