(APC)
teacher
I
have
observed
many
students
struggle
with the
transition
from
precalculus
to
calculus
.
Many
of these
students
were
successful
in
algebra
,
geometry
, and
even
precalculus
but the
concepts
of
calculus
seemed
to be
out
of these
students’
reach
. This
project
was
designed
as an
attempt
to
take
the
mystery
out
of
calculus
through
a
series
of
lessons
based
on
current
research
.
While
completing
these
lessons
students
will
discover
the
need
for
calculus
in
much
the
same
way
that
Sir
Isaac
Newton
and
Gottfried
Leibniz
did
in the
17th
century
. The
series
of
lessons
begins
with a
problem
in
which
the
students
must
utilize
precalculus
skills
in
order
to
calculate
the
average
velocity
of an
object
over
a
given
time
interval
.
While
completing
the
next
four
lessons
,
using
the
same
set
of
circumstances
as in
lesson
one
, the
students
will be
asked
to
refine
their
velocity
calculation
method
so
that
velocity
of an
object
at a
single
point
in
time
can
be
found
.
During
that
time
students
discover
and
define
two
fundamental
components
of
calculus
, the
limit
concept
and the
definition
of
derivative
. These
lessons
were then
successfully
tested
during
one
week
summer
seminar
which
gave
students
a
preview
of
APC
.
Six
students
worked
in
pairs
to
complete
the
series
of
lessons
. The
students
easily
made
the
transition
from
precalculus
to
calculus
and
seemed
to
truly
understand
the
limit
concept
where
students
in
past
years
did
not. These
lessons
showed
students
that
calculus
concepts
are an
extension
of the
students’

prior
knowledge
and are
required
to
solve
real
world
problems
. This
series
of
lessons
was
designed
to be
used
in
my
APC
classroom
, but
instructors
at the
post
secondary
level
may
utilize
this
series
of
lessons
as
well
.
