Notes
This
research
focuses
on the
role
of
instruction
in
improving
student
responses
to
open
ended
questions
in
elementary
mathematics
. The
participants
in the
study
were
elementary
school
students
in
third
grade
. The
participants
were
chosen
based
on a
random
selection
.
All
students
were
given
the
same
eight
question
pretest
. The
teacher
used
the
notions
of
mathematical
operations
and
collaborative
grouping
. In this
way
,
students
were
taught
to
identify
the
structure
of
word
problems
.
After
eight
weeks
of this
instruction
students
were
tested
as
individuals
with an
eight
question
posttest
. The
same
assessment
was
given
to
all
students
. These
students
were
separated
into
two
groups
. The
control
group
received
no
explicit
instruction
on
responding
to
open
ended
questions
. The
experimental
group
received
explicit
instruction
on
responding
to
open
ended
questions
. The
results
of the
scores
of these
two
groups
were
analyzed
to
determine
if a
connection
exists
between
using
the
notions
of
arithmetic
and
student
responses
to
open
ended
questions
.
Mean
test
scores
for
each
group
were
compared
with the
mean
of the
pretest
. The
information
gathered
from this
study
will be
used
to
guide
further
research
and
inform
teachers
of
elementary
mathematics
of
best
practice
when
teaching
and
assessing
students
engaged
in
instruction
on
responding
to
open
ended
questions
in the
elementary
classroom
.
