Title
Disturbance
and the
Gulf
Coast
environment
: an
investigation
of
hurricane
effects
on
oil
spills
and
coastal
ecology

Notes
The
protection
and
preservation
of
coastal
ecosystems
is
of
great
importance
,
especially
during
a
time
in
which
the
United
States
has
become
exposed
to
copious
amounts
of
leaking
oil
in the
Gulf
Coast
. Not
only
do
the
southern
states
have to
worry
about
hurricanes
destroying
their
coastline
, but
now
they have to
worry
about
oil
encroaching
upon
their
beaches
and
marshes
.
Both
natural
and
man-made
disturbance
events
can
have
direct
,
physical
impacts
on
coastal
systems
. In
order
to
fully
comprehend
an
ecosystem
,
it
is
helpful
to
understand
the
role
of
disturbance
events
within
the
natural
environment
. The
stress
of these
events
can
be
severe
, but
some
habitats
are
resilient
enough
and have the
capability
to
recuperate
. The
amount
of
time
it
takes
for this to
happen
is
dependent
upon
the
intensity
and
frequency
of the
event
.
Evidence
of an
oil
spill
or
hurricane
could
still
be
visible
within
the
environment
for
years
following
the
incident
.
