Notes	Research work reported in the literature has demonstrated that tree-rings record past climatic events as the relationship between tree-ring widths and variations in climate (temperature and precipitation) can be modeled. Therefore, tree-rings are useful in the reconstruction of past climate. The purpose of the research for this thesis is to produce an analysis and description of the climate of the northwest interior southern New England region, encompassing northwestern Connecticut and western Massachusetts. The time period for the research of the climate of this region is from 1695 through 2006. From 1695 through 1928 a common set of weather station instrument (in-situ) observations of temperature and precipitation for the region does not exist. Therefore, proxy data in the form of tree-ring width chronologies of Eastern hemlock (Tsuga canadensis (L.) Carr.) was used to reconstruct temperature and precipitation paleoclimate data for the aforementioned time period. From 1929 through 2006, a common set of climate data is available and these observational data were used to quantify the climate. Linear regression functions were developed and applied in order to reconstruct winter season total precipitation and summer season mean temperature paleoclimate data. Furthermore, for both the paleoclimate and weather station instrument data, time series graphs and also tables were produced. Analysis of the statistical results of the linear regression functions or models appear to corroborate the following. The growth of the ring widths likely explain a small amount of the variance in the paleoclimate parameters. This is reflected in the muted reconstructions that the models produced. However, the validity of the models developed in this study is justified by the results having statistical significance. The time series graphs of the paleoclimate and instrumental observations were interpreted and these interpretations were compared to the literature results regarding climate variability for the geographic region under consideration. Consistent throughout graphs of weather station data and reconstructed graphs of paleoclimate data is the oscillatory nature of the curves. Much effort has been expended by the scientific community in explaining the forcing mechanisms behind the curves. For the paleoclimate reconstructions some evidence in the literature corroborates their validity, as well as their ability to model temperature and precipitation oscillations. Improvements to the models could have been made by choosing tree species that were more sensitive to temperature or that were more drought sensitive. Neither of these options were available at the time of this study.
