Title
A
study
of
pistol
permits
across
Connecticut

Resource Type
Master's Thesis
Notes
In
Connecticut
, a
valid
state
issued
pistol
permit
allows
residents
to
legally
own
,
operate
, and
conceal
a
handgun
.
Much
of the
previous
research
investigating
pistol
permits
examines
aggregate
level
characteristics
and
focuses
on
handgun
concealment
. These
studies
are
taken
as a
foundation
and also
provide
the
methodological
frame
work
for the
current
study
.
Previous
hypotheses
investigating
pistol
permits
are
revisited
and
tested
using
aggregate
level
proxies
for
crime
,
socioeconomic
status
,
race
, and
gun
culture
.
Correlation
matrices
and
regression
models
were
generated
in
order
to
measure
the
relationship
between
pistol
permits
and
established
indicators
.
Correlates
for
pistol
permits
in
Connecticut
appear
to be
consistent
with
previous
research
in
Louisiana
(2004)
and
North
Carolina
(2010)
.
Crime
rates
,
race
and
conservative
measures
were
all
found
to be
significantly
related
to
pistol
permit
rates
.
Median
income
is
not
correlated
with
pistol
permit
rates
. Any
issues
concerning
multicollinearity
were
controlled
for
before
testing
multiple
regression
models
.
Subsequent
analyses
revealed
four
significant
predictors
:
overall
crime
rate
(negative
and
significant)
,
median
income
(negative
and
significant)
,
ratio
of
Republican
to
Democrat
voters
(positive
and
significant)
, and the
percent
change
in
minorities
(positive
and
significant)
. This
model
explains
approximately
37%
of the
variance
in
pistol
permit
rates
across
Connecticut
.
Because
scholars
have
used
similar
demographic
and
social
indicators
to
predict
permitting
rates
, the
current
analysis
of
Connecticut
is
useful
in
determining
whether
or not to those
indicators
hold
true
across
regions
. Also, this
research
is
advantageous
for
political
and
private
affiliations
that
support
or
oppose
gun
policies
that
affect
owning
a
handgun
in
Connecticut
.
