Notes
Yoga
is
known
for its
ability
to
relax
. The
combination
of
stretching
and
deep
breathing
can
relieve
tension
and
provide
a
sense
of
calmness
. The
study
examined
the
effects
of
yoga
on
Connecticut
Mastery
Test
(CMT)
performance
of
elementary
school
children
. The
purpose
of the
study
was to
see
if those
students
participating
in
yoga
prior
to
testing
would have
increased
scores
as
compared
to those
students
who
did
not
participate
in
yoga
prior
to
testing
. The
total
participants
in this
study
were
258
,
which
included
third
(n
=127)
grade
and
fourth
(n
=
132)
students
. Of these
students
,
128
were
males
and
138
were
females
.
Prior
to
testing
each
morning
, the
third
grade
students
went
down
to the
gymnasium
to
participate
in a
30
minute
yoga
DVD
“Yoga-Fit
Kids”
. The
fourth
grades
students
did
not
participate
in
yoga
prior
to
testing
. The
measuring
instrument
used
in this
study
was the
results
of the
raw
mathematics
score
from the
Connecticut
Mastery
Test
(CMT)
. The
student
scores
are
based
upon
an
absolute
standard
and not
compared
to
one
another
. These
standards
are
recognized
by the
Connecticut
Curriculum
Frameworks
.
After
the
scores
were
collected
,
two
statistical
analyses
were
run
to
determine
if there was a
difference
in
scores
of
students
who
participated
in
yoga
and
students
who
did
not
participate
in
yoga
. There was
no
significance
found
between
those
who
participated
in
yoga
and those
who
did
not
participate
in
yoga
with
respect
to the
total
raw
math
score
for the
Connecticut
Mastery
Test
(CMT)
.
Although
the
findings
of this
study
do
not
promote
the
effects
of
yoga
on
Connecticut
Mastery
Test
performance
in
elementary
students
,
yoga
can
still
offer
a
positive
added
bonus
to
physical
education
class
.
Physical
educators
can
use
this
information
to
promote
yoga
in
addition
to
daily
physical
exercise
.
Future
researchers
will be
able
to
focus
on what
tools
can
be
used
to
motivate
students
to
perform
well
on
standardized
tests
.
