Family
predictors

Abstract
A
number
of
risk
and
protective
factors
in the
individual
,
family
,
school
, and
community
domains
have been
associated
with
youth
substance
abuse
. The
present
study
examined
several
family
factors
as
predictors
of
underage
drinking
rates
in
Southeastern
CT
using
a
sample
of
7,364
students
,
grades
six
through
twelve
. The
predictor
variables
that were
examined
include
:
family
attitude
toward
alcohol
use
,
parent
and
sibling
use
of
alcohol
,
family
management
,
parental
attachment
, and
positive
family
involvement
.
Hypotheses
:
Parent
use
and
sibling
use
would be
positively
correlated
while
unfavorable
parent
attitudes
towards
drinking
,
parental
attachment
,
family
management
, and
positive
family
involvement
would be
negatively
correlated
with
use
.
Finally
,
it
was
hypothesized
that the
risk
factors
(parent
use
,
sibling
use
, and
favorable
parent
attitudes)
would
present
as the
strongest
predictors
of
use
.
Methods
:
Survey
data
collected
between
2008-2010
by
SERAC
(a
regional
coalition)
from
students
on their
self-reported
alcohol
use
and
six
identified
family
factors
were
used
to
assess
the
likelihood
of
youth
reporting
drinking
in the
past
30
days
. A
logistic
regression
was
used
to
determine
the
relationship
of these
variables
with
self-reported
alcohol
use
.
Results
: The
study
found
that the
risk
factors
(parent
and
sibling
use
of
alcohol)
were
significant
predictors
of
underage
drinking
.
Parental
disapproval
of
underage
drinking
and
family
management
were
significant
protective
factors
.
Conclusions
:
Interventions
for
underage
drinking
at the
family
level
can
be
effective
,
especially
if
directly
linked
to
positive
role
modeling
and
social
learning
theory
. In
addition
,
parental
disapproval
of
youth
consumption
of
alcohol
along
with
strong
family
management
can
reduce
the
risks
of
underage
drinking
.
