Notes	Geographic variation in phenotypic traits among conspecific populations is well documented. Some studies have revealed that prey species may be induced to develop a defensive morphology when exposed to a specific predator. Interestingly, few studies have investigated prey-induced changes in phenotypic traits of a predator, specifically inducible offenses. In this study, I investigated whether a relationship exists between the shell spine morphology (i.e., spine width and length) of a predatory snail, Mexacanthina lugubris lugubris, and the operculum morphology (i.e., operculum width and length, as well as mantle cavity depth) of its barnacle prey, Chthalamus fissus, by examining the differences in shell spine and barnacle operculum morphologies between the respective conspecific populations from two different locations where significant differences in barnacle operculum morphology have been previously identified. At the location where C. fissus barnacles tend to have wider operculum openings, M. lugubris lugubris snails have wider shell spines while where barnacles have narrow operculum openings, snails have significantly narrower spines. Further experimentation is warranted to determine whether shell spine morphology is a phenotypically plastic trait induced by the operculum morphology of C. fissus (i.e., an inducible offense) or if the difference in shell spine morphology among the two populations of M. lugubris lugubris is a result of selection pressure favoring narrower spines in locations where populations of C. fissus have predominantly narrow operculum openings.
