and its
effect
on
modern

entrance
examinations

Notes
The
purpose
of this
study
is
to
design
a
placement
test
based
upon
the
curriculum
needs
of a
target
magnet
school
. The
placement
test
will be a
diagnostic
tool
to
assist
magnet
schools
in
placing
students
into an
appropriate
course
of
study
. The
researcher
has
examined
the
history
of
diagnostic
testing
, the
profession
of
psychometrics
and its
origins
. The
researcher
then
discusses
the
companies
that are
involved
in
producing
diagnostic
testing
in this
country
today
.
Particular
attention
is
paid
to the
effects
on
magnet
schools
in
maintaining
their
ability
to
effectively
educate
their
incoming
students
. The
magnet
schools
must
review
a
portfolio
of
information
for
every
student
. The
portfolio
should
include
results
of
state
assessments
along
with
grades
from
recent
coursework
. The
state
assessments
provide
a
general
diagnosis
of
current
aptitude
.
Magnet
schools
must
also
determine
what
specific
topics
each
student
has
mastered
based
upon
the
myriad
of
titles
that
appear
on a
middle
school
transcript
.
Is
Algebra
I
the
same
course
as
Accelerated
8th
grade
math
?
Is
Algebra
I
in
district
A the
same
course
as
Algebra
I
in
district
B
? The
researcher’s
magnet
school
currently
has
over
30
feeder
school
districts
. How
can
the
depth
and
breadth
of
each
student’s
education
be
adequately
assessed
for
appropriate
placement
?
Although
all
high
schools
are
looking
for
specific
topics
to be
mastered
so
proper
placement
into a
course
of
study
can
be
determined
for
each
student
, this
issue
is
critical
to the
success
a
math
and
science
magnet
school
.
All
of the
upper
level
courses
are
dependent
upon
the
successful
completion
of
foundation
courses
. The
goal
is
to
provide
a
challenging
series
of
courses
that are
within
reach
of the
student
based
upon
the
successful
application
of their
background
knowledge
.
Titles
of
courses
and
transcripts
do
not
provide
sufficient
evidence
of
students’
learning
.
Therefore
another
vehicle
, the
diagnostic
test
,
must
be
utilized
to
ascertain
this
appropriate
program
of
study
for
each
student
.
