Notes	Tibet is described as merciless at times with its frigid cold temperatures, the world‟s highest mountain ranges, and practically uninhabitable desolate lands. Even though Tibet appears as an untamable landscape to the world, it has actually had a long, rich, and ancient history reaching as far back as 12,000 years. The original inhabitants were a people known for their fantastically strange pagan based religion that would later grow and mix with other religions from various neighboring states. In this way, Tibet‟s neighbors ended up playing a significant part in its history, especially with introduction of the Buddhist religion. Tibetan leaders were originally tribal kings who grew more feudalistic in their endeavors. Once Buddhism was introduced and mixed with their original traditions and culture, Buddhism took on a different form in Tibet, one which came to play a significant part in the workings of Tibetan leadership. Over the coming centuries Buddhist spiritual leaders began to embrace a Tibetan culture more influenced by Buddhist scripture. Seen as more fit to rule in the eyes of Tibetans, Buddhist leaders began to take greater political power over Tibet. As centuries passed the Buddhist leadership would become more defined. Soon, Dalai Lama‟s, would become the kings and rulers over Tibetans both spiritually and politically. It has been this way for the last 600 years. The Dalai Lama‟s of Tibet have been both political and spiritual leaders, who have been reborn again and again over the last six centuries, uninterrupted. They have been discovered at a young age, been spiritually and politically educated, become leader of Tibet, die, and then are reborn again. Even through political turmoil either internally or externally, Tibet still was capable of maintaining a form of political and spiritual leadership in the form of a Dalai Lama. Things changed when the People‟s Liberation Army of China in 1950 invaded Tibet and changed the course of Tibetan history. The 14th Dalai Lama and thousands of Tibetans fled to India where they set up an interim government. Much of what was Tibet was destroyed and manipulated to unrecognizable ruins of what was once a vibrant Tibet, both culturally and spiritually. While Tibet‟s land and its people were to be changed forever from that moment, their leadership system, the Dalai Lama institution, did not change. In fact it grew into an international force of unmistakable significance. The Dalai Lama institution did not disappear when the Tibetans fled, but it grew even more powerful. The 14th Dalai Lama ended up becoming not only one of the world‟s greatest leaders but became the main symbol of identity for Tibetans. The Dalai Lama institution has become, even more so in these times, relevant and significant. However, the 14th Dalai Lama will eventually pass on leaving behind a people without a leader. Questions remain on how, where, and if the Dalai Lama institution should remain in this modern world. The 14th Dalai Lama has expressed his various views along with others in an attempt to answer these questions.
