Master's Thesis
Notes
This
thesis
explores
the
development
and
purposes
of
First
Year
Experience
programs
for
college
freshmen
.
It
also
explores
the
benefits
that
students
obtain
as a
result
of
participating
in
First
Year
Experience
classes
. This
is
accomplished
through
a
review
of the
literature
on the
topics
of the
transition
to
college
and
First
Year
Experience
programs
.
Many
aspects
of
such
programs
are
examined
,
including
how and
why
they were
created
, the
topics
they
cover
, the
benefits
they
produce
and the
struggles
they
face
. In
addition
,
students
who
had
recently
participated
in a
First
Year
Experience
course
were
surveyed
about
their
experiences
. They were
asked
to
answer
questions
about
their
overall
experience
as
well
as how the
class
impacted
them in the
categories
of
academics
,
time
management
,
knowledge
and
use
of
campus
resources
,
campus
involvement
and
social
life
. These
categories
were
created
based
on the
benefits
of
First
Year
Experience
courses
found
in the
current
research
. The
participants‟
answers
to the
survey
questions
are then
discussed
based
on the
above
categories
. The
results
of the
study
provide
anecdotal
evidence
of the
benefits
of
First
Year
Experience
classes
. The
majority
of the
student
felt
that they
gained
skills
and
knowledge
in
terms
of their
academics
,
time
management
,
knowledge
and
use
of
campus
resources
,
campus
involvement
and
social
life
.
Finally
,
recommendations
for
future
research
about
First
Year
Experience
classes
and
suggestions
for
teaching
these
courses
are
offered
.
