Notes	This thesis explores the development and purposes of First Year Experience programs for college freshmen. It also explores the benefits that students obtain as a result of participating in First Year Experience classes. This is accomplished through a review of the literature on the topics of the transition to college and First Year Experience programs. Many aspects of such programs are examined, including how and why they were created, the topics they cover, the benefits they produce and the struggles they face. In addition, students who had recently participated in a First Year Experience course were surveyed about their experiences. They were asked to answer questions about their overall experience as well as how the class impacted them in the categories of academics, time management, knowledge and use of campus resources, campus involvement and social life. These categories were created based on the benefits of First Year Experience courses found in the current research. The participants‟ answers to the survey questions are then discussed based on the above categories. The results of the study provide anecdotal evidence of the benefits of First Year Experience classes. The majority of the student felt that they gained skills and knowledge in terms of their academics, time management, knowledge and use of campus resources, campus involvement and social life. Finally, recommendations for future research about First Year Experience classes and suggestions for teaching these courses are offered.
