Notes	This thesis was designed to evaluate the current state of knowledge on the interconnections between the World Conferences on women held by the United Nations and the Black feminist movement. The study will look at international changes initiated during the United Nations Decade for Women and subsequent years. By investigating this topic, one would hope to (a) identify patterns of international changes that could impact national feminist movements; (b) highlight the changes that have occurred in the Black feminist movement of the United States; and (c) research what effect(s) these national and international connections had and/or will have on the state of Black feminisms. Given the nature of the study, this investigation may collect information that could shed light on some of the problems the target community faces, and possibly provide some solutions to the present issues. The decision to handle this topic is due, in part, to the longstanding interest in Africana women's studies by the investigator. The other reason is due to the gap in research concerning how these conferences have affected global Black populations in First World countries, where their issues might otherwise be ignored. There are five main research questions in regards to the issue of the relationship between the United Nations and Black feminisms. First, how was the United Nations formed and what were its shortcomings? Second, what were some of the issues in the formulation and execution of the women's rights agenda within the United Nations? Third, what are the racial and gender-based issues that occur internationally (with the United Nations) and nationally (in the United States)? Fourth, what interconnections exist between the United Nations and the Black feminist movement? Fifth, has this connection helped or hindered the women of the African-American community? This study demonstrates that there are racial and gender-based prejudices within the structure of the United Nations that have influenced its entities and its conferences. Further, one will observe how these racial and gender-based issues affect social movements and policy making on both national and international levels. Finally, this thesis proves that these biases can be substantially reduced nationally and internationally with the efforts of women of color.
