Notes	The main thrust of summer bridge programs is to retain at risk populations within higher education institutions and to provide them an equal footing with other students (Kezar, 2000). In 2007 the average retention rate among all U.S. institutions of higher education from first year to second year was 68.7%. Within this national average, retention was significantly lower among 2-year schools compared to 4 year schools. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact participation in the summer bridge program had on academic achievement, specifically first semester and first year grade point average (GPA) as well as the retention rate of 19 selected summer program participants entering University of Hartford - Hillyer College during the fall semester of 2009 and spring 2010, directly after graduating from high school. This study examined the impact participation in the two-week summer program had on students’ first semester GPA, first year GPA and retention rate of these students as compared to matched pair students who did not attend the summer bridge program. Gender, ethnicity and SAT-M, as they relate to the selection of matched pairs were also considered for the purposes of matching pairs of students for the sample. ANOVA, Chi-square, frequencies and percentages were used in the analysis of data.
