Notes
Relaxation
training
alleviates
psychological
and
physiological
stress
responses
.
Some
research
indicates
that
relaxation
training
can
be
enhanced
through
biofeedback
(i.e.
,
auditory
and/or
visual
feedback
that
corresponds
to
physiological
changes
in
real
time)
.
However
,
much
of this
research
has been
conducted
with
young
adults
or
older
adults
with
chronic
ailments
. To
date
,
we
know
very
little
about
how
relaxation
training
with or
without
biofeedback
affects
normal
,
healthy
older
adults’
stress
responses
.
Thus
, the
purpose
of the
present
study
was to
examine
the
effects
of
relaxation
training
with and
without
biofeedback
on
young
and
older
adults’
psychological
and
physiological
stress
responses
.
Young
(n
=
20)
and
older
adults
(n
=20)
experienced
six
sessions
of
relaxation
training
with or
without
biofeedback
.
Participants
completed
psychological
and
physiological
batteries
before
training
commenced
and
after
training
completed
.
Psychological
measures
included
the
Beck
Depression
Inventory-II
(Beck
,
Steer
,
&
Brown
,
1996)
,
Beck
Anxiety
Inventory
(Beck
&
Steer
,
1990)
,
Nijmegen
Hyperventilation
Syndrome
Questionnaire
(van
Doorn
,
Colla
,
&
Folgering
,
1982)
and The
Coping
Resources
Inventory
for
Stress
(Matheny
,
Curlette
,
Aycock
,
Pugh
,
&
Taylor
,
2009)
.
Physiological
responses
(e.g.
,
skin
temperature
,
skin
conductance
,
abdominal
respiration
and
heart
rate)
were
monitored
during
a
stress
battery
containing
alternating
phases
of
stress-inducing
events
and
rest
.
Participants
exhibited
improvements
on
most
psychological
and
physiological
measures
.
Biofeedback
did
not
appear
to
enhance
physiological
or
psychological
responses
to
stress
.
Although
older
adults
responded
comparably
to
young
adults
on
psychological
measures
,
older
adults
exhibited
BIOFEEDBACK
,
STRESS
RESPONSE
, AND
AGE
3
differential
responses
on
two
physiological
measures
. The
clinical
implications
of these
findings
are
discussed
.
