Title

of
inquiry-based
instruction
in the
teaching
of
culture
:
effects
on
understanding
and
motivation

Master's Thesis
Notes
Due
to
globalization
,
multiculturalism
, and the
necessity
of
context
while
learning
a
language
, the
study
of
culture
is
becoming
increasingly
more
important
.
Currently
,
world
language
teachers
spend
most
of their
instructional
time
teaching
grammar
and
vocabulary
.
Many
educators
approach
the
study
of
culture
by
teaching
facts
, and the
students
do
not
develop
an
understanding
of
culture
nor
the
skills
to
interpret
cultural
situations
.
Little
research
has been
conducted
about
effective
methods
of
teaching
culture
. The
purpose
of this
investigation
was to
examine
the
effects
of
inquiry-based
instruction
on the
learning
and
motivation
of
students
as they
studied
culture
in a
high
school
class
of
world
language
.
During
this
study
,
students
worked
through
an
inquiry
process
in
order
to
learn
about
the
culture
of the
Taino
Indians
.
After
being
immersed
in the
topic
, they
constructed
inquiry
questions
,
investigated
using
multiple
sources
, and
synthesized
information
.
Finally
, they
shared
their
learning
with the
class
and
took
action
.
Student
learning
about
products
,
perspectives
, and
practices
of
culture
was
measured
through
open-ended
pre
and
post
assessments
.
Information
regarding
their
attitudes
about
learning
culture
through
inquiry
was
gathered
through
anonymous
surveys
and
interviews
.
Results
of the
study
showed
that
students
had
developed
an
understanding
of
Taino
culture
and
expressed
a
positive
attitude
about
inquiry
learning
due
to the
choice
of
topics
and
self-direction
of their
research
, as
well
as the
opportunity
to
study
a
specific
topic
in
depth
(as
opposed
to
studying
a
general
topic
on a
surface
level)
.
Students
did
express
concerns
about
not
having
covered
enough
material
, as
well
as
frustrations
about
locating
and
evaluating
resources
without
much
teacher
support
. In
order
to
effectively
implement
inquiry-based
learning
in the
classroom
,
teachers
could
work
toward
putting
more
emphasis
on the
process
of
learning
,
delegating
more
control
to
students
, and
teaching
students
how to
effectively
locate
and
evaluate
resources
. In
conclusion
,
inquiry
serves
as an
effective
,
motivating
method
of
study
that
results
in a
deeper
understanding
of the
perspectives
,
products
, and
practices
of
culture
.
