Notes	Brazil is rapidly transitioning into an economic superpower and key global player in the 21st century - a development that few if any could have predicted even just a quarter-century ago when the country was deeply mired in foreign debt and racked by widespread social unrest and political upheaval. Due to a confluence of factors, notably including the restoration of democracy in the 1980s as well as the sound macroeconomic policies of the past two administrations, Brazil today is not only enjoying a period of prolonged prosperity and stability unprecedented in its history, but is also managing to effectively translate its increasing national wealth into increasing international influence. Indeed, as one of the fastest growing economies in the world and an emerging leader in such critically important sectors as agriculture and energy, Brazil’s ability to project “soft power” in order to secure foreign interests is steadily enhancing, and, as a result, Brazilian authorities have come to adopt a highly ambitious foreign policy agenda. In this thesis, I examine Brazil’s ongoing rise as a key player in world affairs, covering everything from its historical development, present-day catalysts, and future implications. I argue that Brazil’s surging economic growth over recent years in conjunction with its current foreign policy agenda has the potential to profoundly reshape the international geopolitical landscape in the 21st century through a dramatic redistribution of power and resources. I also analyze and predict the likely outcomes of many of Brazil’s more ambitious goals, which include restructuring global political/financial organizations (United Nations, World Bank, International Monetary Fund, etc.), spear-heading economic integration in Latin America, and establishing extensive trade/diplomatic partnerships with other developing countries around the world.
