Title
Engaging
all
students
with the
use
of
authentic
literature
Publisher
Central Connecticut State University
Date

Resource Type
Master's Thesis
Notes
In an
effort
to
further
research
the
use
and
benefits
of
authentic
literature
in the
foreign
language
classroom
this
action
research
has been
proposed
. The
qualitative
study
focused
on
appropriate
techniques
and
strategies
in
order
to
engage
middle
school
learners
.
After
careful
revision
of
available
information
on the
use
of
authentic
literature
and
literature
in
general
, the
study
was
conducted
in
two
sixth
grade
classes
.
Five
pieces
of
authentic
literature
were
presented
to those
two
classes
between
October
and
April
. The
results
of the
study
have
shown
that
authentic
literature
can
indeed
be a
valuable
tool
in any
L2
classroom
but
may
not
always
be the
most
engaging
choice
.
Through
the
use
of
anonymous
pre
and
post
surveys
as
well
as
short
reflection
sheets
it
was
possible
to
explore
and
analyze
students’
attitudes
towards
authentic
literature
used
in
lessons
. In
addition
,
teacher’s
observation
and
reflections
support
the
difficult
task
of
engaging
middle
school
learners
with the
use
of
authentic
literature
despite
its’
cultural
and
linguistic
benefits
. The
recommendation
is
to
seek
authentic
literature
that
supports
and
enhances
instruction
but not
eliminate
other
literary
pieces
that
might
be
linguistically
and
thematically
suited
for
middle
school
learners
. In
addition
,
it
is
crucial
to
incorporate
explicit
instruction
of
multiple
reading
strategies
at
all
language
levels
.
