Title
Does
success
in
algebra
1
correlate
with
success
in
high
school
introductory
chemistry
?
Publisher
Central Connecticut State University
Date
2010
Resource Type
Master's Thesis
Notes
In a
New
England
private
,
all-male
high
school
,
all
students
are
required
to
take
a
chemistry
course
,
regardless
of their
academic
course
level
.
Many
of the
students
and their
parents
believe
, if they are not
strong
in
mathematics
, that they will not be
successful
in
chemistry
. This
view
is
common
to
individuals
who
struggle
in
math
and
science
. On the
surface
, this
conclusion
would
seem
to
make
sense
because
the
basis
of
most
problems
in
chemistry
relate
back
to the
mathematical
ideas
and
algorithms
that are
introduced
in an
algebra
1
course
.
Research
has been
done
based
on
introductory
college
chemistry
courses
and
mathematics
proficiency
,
yet
nothing
directly
relating
to the
high
school
level
chemistry
was
found
.
High
school
students’
grades
in their
algebra
1
,
chemistry
, and
algebra
2
courses
were
obtained
as
well
as
SAT
Math
(SAT-M)
grades
.
Students
earning
below
a
B+
in
algebra
1
earned
on
average
higher
grade
points
in
chemistry
the
following
year
.
All
students
earned
significantly
lower
grade
points
in
algebra
2
their
junior
year
then in
chemistry
their
sophomore
year
. The
average
scores
for the
SAT-M
showed
a
positive
correlation
with
algebra
1
and
2
grade
points
yet
no
correlation
existed
between
the
SAT-M
and
chemistry
. As a
result
of this
study
,
teachers
,
parents
,
academic
deans
and
guidance
counselors
now
are
able
to
make
more
informed
decisions
about
students’
performance
and
effort
. Also,
curriculum
developers
can
use
the
information
in
designing
the
sequence
of
instruction
and
pushing
for
interdisciplinary
curricula
that
benefits
the
learning
of the
student
.
