Title
A
sundry
lot
: the
development
and
application
of
puritan/pilgrim
concepts
of
health
and
disease
in
17th
century
New
England
Publisher
Central Connecticut State University

Resource Type
Master's Thesis
Notes
In
historiography
, the
Puritan/Pilgrims
have been
viewed
as
popular
extremes
capable
of
murderous
destruction
or
fulfilling
the
destiny
for
modern
America
. In the
wake
of
Puritan
settlement
,
epidemics
struck
the
New
England
Native
Americans
. To
many
scholars
, the
Puritan
response
is
thought
to be
completely
bound
by their
religious
beliefs
. This
paper
expands
the
historiography
by
going
beyond
both
classical
and
conquest
theory
to
create
a
holistic
and
contextual
view
of
Puritan
disease
mores
. The
utilization
of a
multidisciplinary
approach
paints
a
dynamic
picture
of this
society
.
Such
methodology
includes
the
study
of
medical
geography
which
explores
the
natural
world
and its
role
in
disease
.
Epidemiology
, the
understanding
of how
human
behavior
affects
health
,
is
an
important
tool
in the
study
of
Puritan
disease
theory
.
Primary
sources
provided
by
state
libraries
, as
well
as
scholarly
works
,
confirm
that
Puritan
knowledge
did
not
exist
in a
theological
vacuum
.
Expanding
theories
and
individual
world
views
within
Renaissance
Europe
fundamentally
changed
medical
science
in
England
. This
impacted
how these
Pilgrims
grasped
health
and
disease
among
themselves
and the
natives
prior
to
settlement
in
1616
.
Despite
the
limitations
of
sixteenth
and
seventeenth
century
medical
science
, this
group
developed
disease
theories
which
were
diverse
in
understanding
and
application
. As the
Puritans
fled
to the
New
World
,
it
was
clear
that
individualism
would
further
dichotomize
within
the
colonies
. With the
perpetuation
of
Renaissance
tools
in
New
England’s
most
southern
colonies
, the
rationalizations
regarding
Native
American
disease
proved
no
less
complex
.
