Title
Earning
a
GED
in
prison
: a
profile
of the
type
of
Inmate
who
obtains
a
GED
while
incarcerated
Publisher
Central Connecticut State University
Date
2010
Resource Type
Master's Thesis
Notes
Previous
research
has
suggested
that
correctional
education
programs
and
GED
attainment
has had a
positive
effect
on
re-incarceration
rates
. This
problem
is
important
and
worthy
of
study
because
the
general
belief
exists
that
criminals
tend
to be
less
educated
than
non-criminals
.
My
study
sought
to
construct
a
profile
of the
type
of
inmate
that
is
most
likely
to
obtain
their
GED
while
in
prison
. This
study
was
conducted
using
data
from the
2004
Survey
of
Inmates
in
State
and
Federal
Correctional
Facilities
. The
survey
was
conducted
for the
Bureau
of
Justice
Statistics
by the
Bureau
of the
Census
and
provides
nationally
representative
data
on
inmates
. In the
survey
,
inmates
provided
information
about
their
criminal
history
,
family
background
, and
personal
characteristics
, etc.
My
sample
size
consists
of a
total
of
5045
inmates
who
answered
the
question
of
whether
they
earned
their
GED
in
prison
or not.
Findings
suggest
that
some
of the
more
serious
offenders
are the
ones
who
were
more
likely
to
get
their
GED
while
incarcerated
. These
findings
have
implications
for the
potential
impact
of
educational
attainment
on
recidivism
.
