Title
RNA
editing
in
Aplysia
californica
Publisher
Central Connecticut State University
Date
2010
Resource Type
Master's Thesis
Notes
The
RNA
molecule
is
responsible
for
providing
information
to the
cell
to
assemble
proteins
specified
by the
DNA
. A
specific
type
of
RNA
editing
can
convert
individual
adenosines
into
inosine
by an
enzyme
called
adenosine
deaminase
acting
on
RNA
(ADAR)
.
Editing
sites
have been
found
to
play
a
significant
role
in
ion
channels
and
neurotransmitter
receptors
of
humans
,
mouse
, and
squid
.
More
editing
sites
may
be
discovered
with the
help
of
Aplysia
californica
,
which
is
a
marine
mollusk
that has
served
as a
classical
learning
model
in
neurobiology
. There are
no
documented
cases
of
editing
found
in the
ganglia
of
Aplysia
according
to the
NCBI
database
. This
study
investigated
if
RNA
editing
can
be
identified
in
potassium
channels
and
glutamate
receptors
of
Aplysia
.
Results
showed
that A to
G
transition
sites
were
found
in the
Kv3.1a
potassium
channel
and
glutamate
receptor
1
mRNA
sequence
,
however
editing
sites
could
not be
confirmed
with
DNA
sequencing
.
When
the
correct
PCR
product
was not
obtained
,
specific
PCR
troubleshooting
techniques
were
implemented
and
discussed
in the
study
.
Identifying
more
editing
sites
in the
nervous
system
with the
help
of
Aplysia
can
help
understand
the
physiology
of the
neuron
,
help
improve
functional
studies
for
RNA
editing
, and
may
help
in the
development
of
specific
treatment
options
for
neurodegenerative
diseases
.
