Title
Concealed
carry
of
handguns
on
college
campuses
by
faculty
,
staff
, and
students
Publisher
Central Connecticut State University
Date
2010
Resource Type
Master's Thesis
Notes
The
incidence
of
mass
public
shootings
has
become
an
issue
of
great
concern
in the
United
States
, and has
become
a
topic
of
focused
research
in
recent
years
.
Among
this
research
, there has been a
notable
lack
of
focus
regarding
the
opinions
of
students
,
faculty
, and
staff
regarding
the
ability
of these
individuals
to
carry
concealed
handguns
for their
protection
against
such
mass
shooting
events
. This
thesis
uses
ANOVA
and
correlation
techniques
to
examine
the
opinions
of
students
,
faculty
, and
staff
regarding
current
policies
,
perceived
safety
while
on
campus
, and
opinions
regarding
concealed
handguns
on
college
campuses
.
Students
(n
=
113)
,
faculty
members
(n
=
5)
, and
staff
(n
=
3)
were
given
a
questionnaire
eliciting
their
opinions
on these
topics
from
three
schools
located
in the
Northeast
,
South
, and
Northwestern
regions
of the
United
States
.
Results
from this
study
indicate
that there are
regional
differences
in
terms
of
perceptions
of
campus
handgun
policies
. Those
who
reside
, and
attend
colleges
and
universities
, in the
south
were
found
to be
more
supportive
of
policy
changes
allowing
the
concealed
carry
of
handguns
on
college
campuses
.
Additionally
, a
variety
of
significant
differences
between
regional
groups
and
demographic
groups
were
found
and are
reported
.
It
is
concluded
that
perceived
safety
and
productivity
may
be
improved
if
university
affiliated
members
were
allowed
to
choose
whether
or not their
university
policy
prohibited
or
allowed
for the
carrying
of
concealed
handguns
on
campus
.
