Notes
Jozef
Retinger
is
one
of the
most
intriguing
Polish
political
activists
of the
Second
World
War
period
. The
mysterious
character
although
almost
completely
unknown
to the
public
,
without
a
doubt
deserves
a
place
in the
history
of
Poland
,
perhaps
even
in the
history
of the
world
.
Retinger
surrounded
himself
, and
collaborated
with,
some
of the
major
political
figures
of the
world
,
such
as
Winston
Churchill
,
Anthony
Eden
,
President
Theodore
Roosevelt
,
Joseph
Stalin
, to
name
a
few
, and
finally
General
Wladyslaw
Sikorski
–
the
head
of the
Polish
government
in
exile
in
London
.
While
working
behind
the
scene
,
Retinger
dedicated
his
work
to
propagating
the
Polish
issue
in the
Western
world
.
Such
activism
earned
Retinger
both
great
recognition
and
respect
as
well
as
severe
criticism
and
condemnation
in the
political
,
academic
and
social
circles
of
modern
times
. Was
Retinger
a
spy
or a
true
patriot
? What were the
motives
behind
the
activities
in
which
he
engaged
? Was he
really
an
undercover
agent
, and if
so
,
whom
did
he
serve
? In the
attempt
of
reconstructing
this
extraordinary
political
persona
and his
activity
during
this
period
,
I
have
used
various
primary
sources
including
memoirs
,
letters
,
biographies
,
articles
,
government
documents
produced
by
Retinger’s
contemporaries
as
well
as by the
later
historians
fascinated
with this
unexpected
celebrity
.
Even
though
the
evidence
regarding
Retinger’s
undercover
activities
seem
to be
very
scarce
,
through
my
research
I
was
able
to
find
substantial
data
suggesting
that
Retinger
was in
fact
an
undercover
agent
working
for the
British
Intelligence
.
