Notes
The
mysticism
of
Philip
K
.
Dick
and
Jorge
Luis
Borges
make
for a
pairing
that
exposes
a
similarity
of
technique
in the
invention
of
imaginary
worlds
. The
use
of the
double
becomes
an
especially
noticeable
method
that will be
explored
at
length
. The
dual
self
that
emerges
from this
examination
,
it
will be
argued
,
shows
the
difficulties
in
interpreting
Dick
and
Borges
as an
oscillation
between
the
two
poles
of
meaning
and
meaninglessness
. The
temptation
to
become
mired
in the
undecidability
of
Dick’s
novels
and
Borges’
stories
,
presents
severe
challenges
for the
reader
who
may
fall
prey
to a
facile
reading
,
simply
admiring
the
oddities
presented
in the
narratives
, and
thus
the
focus
on the
mystical
elements
that
emerge
in a
close
reading
becomes
the
best
way
to
overcome
the
“problem
of
meaning”
and
move
the
pole
of
meaningless
to a
position
that
makes
an
interpretation
possible
in
texts
that
vacillate
between
clarity
and
perplexity
.
