Title
The
spirit
of
our
citizen
soldiers
: the
experiences
of the
Connecticut
14th
Volunteer
Regiment
in the
Civil
War
Publisher
Central Connecticut State University
Date
2010
Resource Type
Master's Thesis
Notes
The
last
time
anyone
spent
considerable
time
writing
about
the
Connecticut
14th
Volunteer
Infantry
Regiment
was in
1906
. In that
year
,
Charles
D
.
Page
chronicled
the
experiences
of the
regiment
,
providing
an
invaluable
case
study
into the
experiences
of
Connecticut’s
Civil
War
soldiers
.
Currently
, the
United
States
is
engaged
in
two
wars
, in
Iraq
and
Afghanistan
, and
involved
in a
more
global
war
on
terror
.
Our
soldiers
on the
front
lines
face
similar
issues
as those of that
fought
in the
Civil
War
.
Questions
of
duty
,
honor
, and
courage
were
posed
and
answered
by the
men
of the
14th
. As the
150th
anniversary
approaches
, a
thesis
analyzing
their
experiences
in the
major
engagements
of the
Civil
War
is
relevant
and
valuable
. The
Connecticut
14th
was at the
most
decisive
of
Civil
War
battles
:
Antietam
,
Fredericksburg
,
Chancellorsville
,
Gettysburg
, and
Petersburg
. The
regiment
played
key
roles
in
each
of those
battles
.
Subsequently
, they
suffered
more
casualties
than any
other
Connecticut
regiment
. This
thesis
will
examine
their
experiences
and
evaluate
them
within
the
context
of the
current
historiography
. The
Connecticut
14th
shared
similar
experiences
as those of
other
Civil
War
soldiers
.
Even
more
significantly
,
it
will be
demonstrated
that the
men
of the
Connecticut
14th
reacted
to their
experiences
in
similar
ways
, and for the
most
part
shared
the
ideologies
of their
comrades
in
arms
. The
men
of the
14th
also
reflected
the
divisive
politics
and
ideologies
occurring
simultaneously
back
in
Connecticut
,
mirroring
the
difficulties
for the
people
left
at
home
. This
places
the
14th
concurrent
with
most
of the
current
historiography
regarding
the
common
soldier
in the
Civil
War
,
such
as that of
historians
James
McPherson
and
Reid
Mitchell
.
Specifically
, the
men
of the
14th
closely
linked
courage
and
manhood
,
interweaving
the
two
throughout
their
writings
.
Additionally
, and in
accordance
with
James
McPherson’s
overall
conclusions
regarding
Civil
War
soldiers
,
most
of the
men
that
made
up
the
14th
were
motivated
to
fight
out
of a
sense
of
duty
and
honor
.
Given
the
evidence
provided
within
this
thesis
,
it
is
safe
to
conclude
that the
soldiers
of the
14th
were a
true
representation
of the
“citizen
soldier.”
