Orthorexia
is
characterized
as an
unhealthy
obsession
with
healthy
food
. In
contrast
with
anorexia
nervosa
(AN)
, the
quality
of
food
takes
precedence
over
the
quantity
consumed
.
Nevertheless
,
orthorexia
shares
many
of the
same
dangerous
health
consequences
. The
present
research
explored
disordered
eating
symptomalogy
and its
correlation
with AN,
eating
disorder
not-otherwise-
specified
(EDNOS)
, and
orthorexia
.
One-hundred
and
thirty-nine
participants
,
recruited
from
Central
Connecticut
State
University
participated
,
completing
an
orthorexia
assessment
(ORTO-15)
and
eating
disorder
examination
questionnaire
(EDE-Q)
. A
high
prevalence
of
orthorexia
(77.7%)
and
clinical
eating
psychopathology
(11%
;
8.4%
dietary
restraint
,
25.4%
shape
concern
,
5.3%
eating
concern
,
23.1%
weight
concern)
was
found
.
Orthorexia
was
associated
with
clinically
significant
eating
disorder
characteristics
,
specifically
dietary
restraint
(8%)
.
No
differences
were
noted
across
gender
,
age
,
BMI
, or
eating
regimen
. These
results
of
yield
valuable
information
regarding
disordered
eating
in
college
students
and
add
valuable
information
in
support
for
valid
diagnostic
criteria
.
