Notes
The
hypothesis
of the
present
study
was that
female
survivors
of
childhood
sexual
abuse
who
use
their
spirituality/religiousness
to
cope
with the
trauma
of the
abuse
will have
lower
rates
of
depression
and
anxiety
than those
who
are not
spiritual
or
do
not
use
spirituality
to
cope
.
Participants
consisted
of
30
women
recruited
from
Connecticut
support
groups
for
sexual
assault/incest
.
Measures
consisted
of a
questionnaire
containing
the
Beck
Depression
Inventory
,
Beck
Anxiety
Inventory
,
Spiritual
Involvement
&
Beliefs
Scale
, and
general
multiple
choice
questions
regarding
the
specifics
of the
abuse
.
Questionnaires
were
mailed
to the
directors
of these
groups
and
completed
by the
participants
and then
mailed
back
to the
researcher
to be
analyzed
.
Results
were
computed
using
both
Pearson
and
Spearman
correlations
. A
negative
correlation
between
depression
and
spirituality
was
found
,
while
no
correlation
between
spirituality
and
anxiety
was
found
.
Thus
the
hypothesis
that
women
who
used
spirituality
to
cope
would be
less
depressed
was
supported
,
while
the
hypothesis
that those
who
used
spirituality
to
cope
would be
less
anxious
was not.
