This
research
examined
the
extent
of
recorded
abuse
and
neglect
with
committed
delinquent
girls
in the
State
of
Connecticut
. The
study
looked
at
differences
between
those
girls
that have a
history
of
abuse
,
neglect
,
abuse
and
neglect
, and those that
do
not have any
history
of
abuse
and
neglect
. The
purpose
of the
study
was to
explore
the
frequency
and
kind
of
abuse
and
neglect
to
see
if the
abuse
and
neglect
is
a
factor
in
female
juvenile
delinquency
.
Existing
data
was
gathered
and
reviewed
from
84
delinquency
and
neglect
records
of the
State
of
Connecticut
Department
of
Children
and
Families
, a
child
protection
agency
. The
data
was
coded
for
confidentiality
and
statistical
testing
was
performed
.
Different
forms
of
abuse
and
neglect
were
reported
at
different
rates
.
Thirty
two
percent
of the
committed
delinquent
girls
in the
study
had at
least
one
substantiated
record
of
physical
abuse
.
Physical
neglect
,
emotional
neglect
, and in
danger
of
abuse
were the
most
common
types
of
neglect
in the
study
.
Thirty
one
percent
of
all
of the
girls
in the
study
alleged
sexual
abuse
at
one
point
.
All
forms
of
abuse
and
neglect
were
recorded
at
least
once
from the
sample
.
Overall
, the
study
shows
that
abuse
and
neglect
was
often
found
in the
committed
delinquent
girls
from the
sample
. The
way
that
childhood
abuse
and
neglect
affects
the
girls
may
have an
impact
on
delinquency
.
