Notes	This research examined the extent of recorded abuse and neglect with committed delinquent girls in the State of Connecticut. The study looked at differences between those girls that have a history of abuse, neglect, abuse and neglect, and those that do not have any history of abuse and neglect. The purpose of the study was to explore the frequency and kind of abuse and neglect to see if the abuse and neglect is a factor in female juvenile delinquency. Existing data was gathered and reviewed from 84 delinquency and neglect records of the State of Connecticut Department of Children and Families, a child protection agency. The data was coded for confidentiality and statistical testing was performed. Different forms of abuse and neglect were reported at different rates. Thirty two percent of the committed delinquent girls in the study had at least one substantiated record of physical abuse. Physical neglect, emotional neglect, and in danger of abuse were the most common types of neglect in the study. Thirty one percent of all of the girls in the study alleged sexual abuse at one point. All forms of abuse and neglect were recorded at least once from the sample. Overall, the study shows that abuse and neglect was often found in the committed delinquent girls from the sample. The way that childhood abuse and neglect affects the girls may have an impact on delinquency.
