Notes
This
thesis
explores
the
relationship
between
the
biographies
of
William
Butler
Yeats's
friends
and the
icons
of
Heroic
Ideals
that the
poet
creates
from them
Tracing
the
development
of the
ideals
from the
early
fictional
character
of
Cuchulain
through
the
lives
and
events
of his
contemporaries
allows
one
to
observe
the
evolution
of the
hero
in
Yeat's
vision
.
Yeats's
icons
of
Heroic
Ideals
are
inspirational
symbolic
human
beings
that
exemplify
a
specific
intangible
.
While
much
of the
focus
is
on
William
Butler
Yeats's
poetry
during
the
years
of
1910
-
1920
,
other
of his
texts
are
fiequently
used
. The
fictional
character's
chapter
deals
with the
early
plays
of
Cuchulain
, On
Baile's
Strand
, and The
Green
Helmet
.
Other
materials
utilized
include
The
Autobiography
of
William
Butler
Yeats
,
Essays
and
Introductions
,
Later
Essays
and
Reviews
,
Memoirs
,
Mythologies
, and A
Vision
. Also
extensively
consulted
are the
letters
,
interviews
and
newspaper
articles
written
by or
about
Yeats
.
Each
of the
chapters
contains
a
brief
biography
of an
associate
of
Yeats
, the
transformation
of the
person
into a
poetic
character
, and the
pure
Heroic
Ideal
. With
one
exception
, the
Maude
Gonne
chapter
,
all
consist
of a
main
character
that
is
an
important
influence
in
Yeats's
life
and
supporting
characters
.
All
of the
heroic
characters
exhibit
three
basic
traits
:
solitude
,
spiritual
triumph
in the
face
of
physical
defeat
, and
selfpossession
.
John
O'Leary
is
transformed
into an
icon
of the
Heroic
Political
Martyr
. The
ideal
is
also
found
in the
poems
dealing
with the
leaders
of the
Easter
Rising
:
Constance
Markievicz
,
Thomas
MacDonagh
,
Patrick
Pearse
,
John
MacBride
, and
James
Connolly
.
Augusta
,
Lady
Gregory
becomes
an
image
of
Heroic
Courtesy
as
does
the
dying
actress
,
Mabel
Beardsley
.
Robert
Gregory
is
portrayed
as a
symbol
of the
complete
Heroic
Aristocrat
. The
complexity
of a
complete
Heroic
figure
is
reinforced
by the
representation
of
John
Millington
Synge
as the
complete
Heroic
Artist
.
Yeats
encounters
difficulties
when
he
attempts
to
convert
Maude
Gonne
into an
icon
of
Heroic
Beauty
. The
concept
of
Beauty
,
within
the
definition
of
Yeats
'
s
heroic
qualities
,
is
inherently
weak
because
it
is
an
ephemeral
attribute
rather
than an
active
pursuit
of a
philosophy
of
life
.
William
Butler
Yeats
is
searching
for
something
to
believe
in,
something
beyond
the
everyday
mortal
world
-
heroes
and
mystics
,
inspiration
and
secrets
. His
work
chronicles
the
efforts
of the
poet
to
create
a
body
of
work
that
can
be
inspirational
. His
icons
of
Heroic
Ideals
are but
one
part
of that
larger
vision
.
