Notes
According
to
figures
compiled
by the
Brain
lnjury
Association
,
approximately
99,000
people
survive
each
year
with
permanent
disabilities
resulting
from
traumatic
brain
injuries
(Olendorf
,
Jeryan
&
Boyden
,
1999)
.
Traumatic
brain
injury
(TBI)
is
a
leading
disability
causing
physical
,
cognitive
, and
behavioral
changes
in
survivors
, with a
resulting
decline
in their
quality
of
life
and
interpersonal
relationships
.
Only
a
handful
of
studies
have
obtained
input
from
both
survivors
and their
caregivers
regarding
factors
related
to
quality
of
life
and
support
after
the
injury
. In this
study
,
participants
(n
=
36)
responded
to
questionnaires
designed
to
evaluate
these
factors
. The
sample
consisted
of
22
brain
injury
survivors
and
14
caregivers
who
attended
support
groups
through
the
Brain
Injury
Association
of
Connecticut
or
lived
in the
greater
Hartford
community
. The
brain
injury
survivors
completed
four
self-reports
assessing
quality
of
life
,
cognitive
failure
,
depression
and
social
support
. The
caregivers
responded
to
four
questionnaires
,
two
being
self-reports
of
depression
and
caregiver
burden
. The
other
two
surveys
required
the
caregivers
to
report
on the
survivors1
quality
of
life
and
cognitive
failure
.
Possible
variables
that
may
predict
quality
of
life
in
survivors
and
caregiver
burden
were
examined
,
such
as
demographic
characteristics
,
depression
,
social
support
and
cognitive
failure
.
Caregiver
burden
was the
only
variable
found
to
predict
survivor
life
satisfaction
when
reported
by
caregivers
. This
showed
a
significant
negative
correlation
between
the
predictor
caregiver
burden
and
survivor
life
satisfaction
as
reported
by
caregivers
. This
relationship
suggests
that as
caregiver
stress
increases
, the
life
satisfaction
of
survivors
as
perceived
by
caregivers
is
rated
more
poorly
.
Social
support
,
cognitive
failure
,
depression
and
other
demographic
variables
were not
found
to be
predictors
of
life
satisfaction
.
Further
, a
relationship
was
found
between
how the
caregiver
views
the
quality
of
life
of the
survivor
and
caregiver's
own
level
of
stress
,
meaning
that a
caregiver
who
thinks
the
survivor's
quality
of
life
is
poor
is
more
likely
to
experience
higher
levels
of
stress
. In
general
, the
study
had
favorable
results
with
survivors
being
moderately
satisfied
with their
lives
despite
the
fact
that the
majority
of the
sample
had
severe
injuries
. The
study
also
found
two
strong
relationships
,
one
among
depression
and
life
satisfaction
and
another
between
cognitive
failure
and
age
. A
significant
relationship
was also
found
between
depression
and
smoking
,
showing
that
TBI
smokers
had
higher
levels
of
depression
than
TBI
non-smokers
. In this
study
,
caregivers
also
exhibited
positive
outcomes
,
reporting
low
levels
of
depression
and
caregiver
burden
. A
relationship
was
evident
between
caregiver
burden
and
age
,
indicating
that as
age
increases
caregiver
stress
lessens
.
