Notes	In March 1999, a six-month water quality survey of Wethersfield Cove was initiated to determine the spatial and temporal patterns of water quality impairment from periodic releases of untreated sanitary waste and storm water into the Cove. These releases are also known as combined sewer overflows, and generally occur following rainstorms when excess waste and storm water is diverted into Folly Brook and then into Wethersfield Cove. Pollution problems in Folly Brook and Wethersfield Cove from combined sewer overflows date back to the early-1960s. The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection has worked with the Town of Wethersfield and the wastewater treatment facility, the Metropolitan District Commission, to reduce the number and frequency of combined sewer overflows into Folly Brook and Wethersfield Cove, however, progress to date has been slow. This water survey was designed to compare the water quality of Wethersfield Cove and Folly Brook before and after CSO releases. Water samples were collected twice a month during dry and wet weather conditions from nine sites within Wethersfield Cove and its two tributaries, Folly Brook and an "Unnamed" Stream. Temperature, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, and Secchi disk depths were measured in the field. The collected water samples were analyzed for fecal coliforms, enterococci, Escherichia coli, reactive phosphorus, total phosphorus, total suspended solids, and turbidity in the laboratory. Bacterial concentrations frequently exceeded Connecticut's water quality standards and guidelines during both dry and wet weather conditions. In Folly Brook, bacterial concentrations exceeded water quality standards and guidelines in 73.3%-86.7% of samples. Similarly, bacterial concentrations in the "Unnamed" Stream were elevated in 63.3%-93.3% of samples. Bacterial concentrations were generally lower within Wethersfield Cove, but still exceeded the water quality standards and guidelines in 34.7%-41.3% of samples. Comparison of dry and wet weather results indicate that other sources in addition to combined sewer overflow releases are polluting Wethersfield Cove. In the "Unnamed" Stream, bacterial concentrations exceeded water quality standards and guidelines for 58.3%-91.7% of dry weather samples and for 50.0%-91.7% of wet weather samples. Discharge from a pipe emanating from the Connecticut Division of Motor Vehicles' property is one potential pollution source requiring further investigation. In Folly Brook, bacterial concentrations exceeded water quality standards and guidelines 50.0%-66.7% of samples collected during dry weather conditions and 83.3%-100.0% of samples collected following wet weather events. The sources contributing to the high bacterial load in Folly Brook during dry weather conditions are not known. Detailed surveys of the upstream area of Folly Brook are warranted. Within Wethersfield Cove, bacterial concentrations exceeded water quality standards and guidelines in 3.3%-23.3% of dry weather samples and for 76.7%-80.0% of wet weather samples. Although the water quality within the Cove is better compared to the tributaries during dry weather, pollution from moored boats and waste from dogs and birds should be assessed. The survey was conducted during a severe drought, and therefore, the results should not be construed to represent normal baseline conditions for Wethersfield Cove. However, it is recommended that the Town of Wethersfield conduct more detailed sanitary surveys and continue monitoring Wethersfield Cove, Folly Brook, and the "Unnamed" Stream. In addition, a public outreach program could be implemented to teach the community about practices that harm and protect the water quality of Wethersfield Cove.
