Notes
As
political
exiles
, the
Roman
philosopher
and
statesman
Lucius
Annaeus
Seneca
(4
BC-65
AD)
, and the
Puritan
colonist
Roger
Williams
(1604-1683)
,
both
wrote
about
exile
from
personal
experience
. This
thesis
examines
the
similarity
demonstrated
by
Williams
and
Seneca
in
treating
the
theme
of
exile
. The
overarching
design
depicts
the
program
of
Roger
Williams
'
exile
literature
as a
recapitulation
of
Seneca's
literary
program
in
exile
. The
literary
corpora
of
Seneca
and
Roger
Williams
are
shown
to
demonstrate
a
discursive
movement
from an
initial
sense
of
personal
frustration
and
powerlessness
to a
later
sense
of
purpose
and
empowerment
. This
progression
is
demonstrated
in the
letters
written
by
each
subject
while
undergoing
exile
. The
epistles
are
considered
as a
literary
format
used
by
Williams
and
Seneca
to
codify
their
experiences
and
attitudes
into a
form
of
socio-political
commentary
. Also, in
manipulating
their
thematic
and
rhetorical
emphases
,
Williams
and
Seneca
demonstrate
the
revolutionary
potential
of the
exile
,
which
is
realized
in the
literary
freedom
to
comment
on
contemporary
social
,
cultural
, and
political
concerns
in a
unique
way
. The
methodology
here will be
primarily
formalist
,
considering
the
literary
language
as a
systematic
program
serving
the
development
of the
literary
persona
. For the
contemporary
reader
, the
overall
effect
can
be
considered
as a
form
of
choric
commentary
. In
equating
the
exile
with the
literary
device
of the
chorus
, the
exile
is
then
seen
as the
ideal
spectator
-
endowed
with
greater
than
average
moral
authority
,
Isolation
from
social
and
political
institutions
is
recast
as the
touchstone
that
legitimizes
and
informs
the
exile's
voice
.
