Notes
Alzheimer's
disease
and
vascular
dementia
are the
two
most
commone
forms
of
dementia
.
Approximately
65-90%
of
all
dementia
cases
represent
one
of these
two
types
.
Early
differentiation
of the
two
diseases
is
crucial
to
proper
therapeutic
treatment
of the
condition
.
Although
diagnosis
of
Alzheimer's
Disease
may
be
problematic
, there are
clinical
features
which
distinguish
it
from
other
forms
of
dementia
. This
present
study
examined
the
nature
and
pattern
of
cognitive
changes
that
distinguish
between
Alzheimer's
Disease
and
vascular
dementia
.
Further
,
it
examined
the
relationships
between
odor
identification
and the
severity
of
cognitive
deficits
in
patients
with
Alzheimer's
disease
and
vascular
dementia
.
Thirty
seven
older
adults
from the
community
and
residential
settings
were
recruited
for the
study
. They
comprised
eleven
individuals
with a
diagnosis
of
Alzheimer's
Disease
,
twelve
persons
diagnosed
with
Vascular
dementia
and
fourteen
age
and
education
matched
healthy
controls
. They were
administered
neuropsychological
tests
. The
results
revealed
statistically
significant
differences
between
the
Alzheimer's
Disease
and
Vascular
dementia
groups
and
normal
controls
on
tests
of
cognitive
functioning
. The
Alzheimer's
Disease
patients
performed
significantly
poorly
than the
Vascular
dementia
and the
normal
controls
in
tests
of
analogies
,
new
learning
,
similarities
,
visual
memory
and
vocabulary
.
Further
, there were
significant
differences
between
the
two
demented
groups
in
tests
of
visual
immediate
memory
and
visual
delayed
memory
.
Alzheimer's
Disease
group
obtained
significantly
lower
scores
in an
odor
identification
test
.
Further
, there was a
significant
correlation
between
the
degree
of
cognitive
deficits
and
odor
identification
in the
vascular
dementia
group
, but not in the
AD
or
normal
control
groups
.
