Abstract
The
Purpose
of this
thesis
was to
add
to the
general
information
about
the
women
executed
by the
state
of
Connecticut
.
It
also
sought
to
examine
why
the
only
executions
of
females
took
place
in the
seventeenth
and
eighteenth
century
. The
subject
was
approached
by
first
identifying
the
women
executed
, and
researching
these
cases
in the
historical
court
records
of the
Connecticut
State
Archives
.
Additional
research
was
conducted
in
historical
newspaper
databases
, and
secondary
sources
. From the
historical
records
and
secondary
sources
I
constructed
a
timeline
and
looked
for
patterns
in the
crimes
females
were
executed
for and
dates
of
female
executions
.
I
compared
my
finding
first
to
comparative
works
of
Massachusetts
and of
national
studies
. Then
I
reviewed
the
work
of
historians
and
looked
for
insights
as to
why
there were
certain
time
periods
in
which
Connecticut
was
far
more
active
in the
execution
of
women
than in
others
. The
result
of
my
research
was that
I
identified
two
periods
in
which
the
state
was
most
likely
to
execute
women
. These
finding
regarding
execution
patterns
of
women
in
Connecticut
supported
historical
works
that
explored
legal
and
social
changes
that
occurred
in these
same
periods
. There has not been an
adequate
study
of the
implementation
of the
death
penalty
in
Connecticut’s
history
nor
an
accurate
accounting
of
exactly
how
many
men
and
women
have been
executed
by
legal
authority
in the
colony
and then
state’s
history
.
