Notes	The story of the Golden Fleece is one of the oldest stories in Europe. The episode of Jason and Medea, their passionate love transformed into fierce hate and destructive desire of vengeance has been a theme of many literary, cinematographic and musical masterpieces. Of great popularity in classical times, the story continues to inspire dramatists, movie directors and musicians of the contemporary world. Medea - a woman abandoned by her husband for a younger woman after years of sacrifices and submission to his aspirations and desires, to this day stirs emotions ranging from sympathy to hatred. This thesis is composed of five individual analyses of a dominant theme -the portrayal of Medea by various authors from antiquity to the 20thcentury. Four literary interpretations and one cinematographic adaptation will be examined and compared, with the focus on the mythical figure of the protagonist, her character and motives. This study begins with a summary of the ancient Greek myth of Jason and Medea, which will provide the background information necessary for comprehension of the works studied. What will follow is an analysis and comparisons of the "five Medeas". The first is the classical interpretation of the myth written in 5 century B.C. by Euripides, which is considered to be the prototype to the works adapted by future authors. Next, the Latin version of the myth, written between the years 49 and 62 by Lucius Annaeus Seneca will be used as the focus of the study. Two important adaptations by French writers, the 17th century Pierre Comeille and 20th century Jean Anouilhwill be explored. Finally, a movie filmed in 1969 by an Italian director, Pier Paolo Pasolini, will conclude the analysis of the image of Medea portrayed throughout ages. Each chapter will include brief biographical presentation of the author, with reflection on how the different cultural, historical and socio-economic contexts of each author's times influenced his vision of the protagonist: the concept of misogyny and gender inequality stressed by Euripides; the morality question characteristic to comedian theatre; Seneca's philosophy of neostoicism; Anouilh's concept of idealism versus the reality of war; Pasolini's concern with changes taking place in the Italy of "the economic miracle". As the individual authors' concerns and thoughts varied, so did their vision of Medea - in some works Medea is a furious, full of hate witch, in others, an ordinary woman mistreated by her husband and society. Various critics have considered analysis of the five works individually. Conducting my research for the purpose of this thesis, I have consulted a variety of secondary sources. Don Nardo's, Emily McDermott's and Robert Smith's research has been a valuable resource on the Medea of Euripides. Studies of Norman Pratt, James Sanderson and Everett Zimmerman were used for the purpose of understanding the Medea of Seneca. The works of Michele Longino, Claire Carlin, Maria Tastevin and Octave Nadal contributed to the analysis of the Medee of Corneille. In my research pertaining to the Medee of Anouilh, the works of Leonard C. Pronko and Pol Vandromme were consulted. I used the work of Christophe Mileschi when discussing the Medea of Pasolini.
