Notes
An
internet-based
survey
which
asked
about
various
issues
related
to
food
allergies
was
completed
by
492
primary
caregivers
of
young
children
during
a
10
week
period
.
Respondents
were
solicited
through
local
and
online
food
allergy
support
groups
as
well
as
notices
handed
out
at
pre-schools
and a
pediatrician's
office
. The
focus
of this
survey
was to
determine
:
(1)
what
FA
facts
caregivers
were
already
aware
of and
gaps
in
knowledge
, and
(2)
participants
'
health
beliefs
about
the
seriousness
of
FA
. For
many
of the
research
questions
in this
study
,
primary
caregivers
of at
least
one
child
with
FA
made
up
one
group
while
those
whose
children
do
not have
FA
made
up
a
comparison
group
.
Prevalence
of
FA
was
overestimated
by
most
(75%)
respondents
.
Fifty-nine
percent
of
caregivers
of
children
at
high
risk
of
FA
incorrectly
perceived
their
child's
risk
level
; they
underestimated
the
actual
risk
of their
child
developing
FA
.
Moreover
,
most
(82%)
had
never
been
told
by their
health
care
providers
what the
actual
risk
of
FA
was for their
children
,
though
evidence-based
recommendations
for
primary
prevention
of
FA
in
high
risk
infants
are
known
in the
medical
community
. A
large
percentage
(78%)
accurately
stated
that
parents
should
think
about
their
child's
FA
risk
during
pregnancy
. There
is
a
need
for a
FA
awareness
and
prevention
program
that
initiates
a
dialogue
between
expecting-parents
and their
physicians
.
One
limiting
factor
in this
study
was the
skewed
sample
of
respondents
. They were
disproportionately
from
high
income
families
, were
highly
educated
, and
came
primarily
from the
Northeast
.
