Notes	Much has been written about America's pre-First World War involvement with Imperial Germany and her undersea boats, commonly referred to simply as U-Boatsremembering that the United States remained neutral for the first 2 years, 8 months, of the "Great War". Amazingly, however, when one reads the multitude of literature available on the subject there is very little, if any, mention of two rather significant events that took place involving Germany's undersea boats and America. During the fall of 191 6 two German submarines made calls to New England ports, on two entirely different missions. The first submarine, the U-53, came to New England armed and spoiling for a fight against the Allies (remembering that during the fall of 191 6 America was still a neutral country). After a brief port call at Newport, Rhode Island the U-53 took that fight to the shipping lanes directly off the New England coast, leaving political turmoil in her wake-along with five sunken ships. The second submarine, the Deutschland, had already come to the United States once before. In July Of 1916 the Deutschland had docked at the port of Baltimore, Maryland having run "under" the British blockade of Germany with a ship crammed full of supplies-she was literally a submersible merchantman. Now, during the fall of 19 16, she was back, having made New London, Connecticut her port of call this time. And even though she wasn't looking for a fight she nonetheless killed five sailors-all of who were Americans. This thesis tells of the voyages of these two submarines as told through official reports and local newspapers. The undersea boats reasons for coming to New England, the actions of the crewmen well at port, and the actions undertaken by the submarines upon leaving port are examined-as well as the political fall-out the German vessels caused for a then neutral America.
