Depression
is
characterized
by a
mood
and
behavior
, that
can
affect
the
ability
of a
person
to
perform
daily
activities
and
interact
with
others
.
Depression
is
an
illness
that
can
be
caused
by
biochemical
and
environmental
changes
.
Chemical
imbalances
of
neurotransmitters
serotonin
and
norepinephrine
have been
identified
as
one
of the
major
causes
of
depression
.
Imbalance
or
malfunction
of any
factor
that
leads
to
proper
functioning
of these
neurotransmitters
can
lead
to
depression
. The
rate
of
genetic
predisposition
increases
with a
strong
history
of
multiple
generations
of
family
members
with
depression
. Any
biological
or
social
change
that
disrupts
the
neurobiological
processes
may
also
cause
depression
.
Depression
is
associated
with
alterations
in the
structure
of
parts
of the
brain
.
Major
depression
is
associated
with
atrophy
in the
hippocampus
.
Some
depressed
individuals
show
cortical
atrophy
dilated
ventricles
,
localized
changes
in
white
matter
and in the
frontal
cortex
.
Treatment
can
be
achieved
by the
use
of
antidepressants
and
medical
monitoring
.
Other
types
of
therapy
like
ECT
are
used
rarely
, but
effectively
. This
paper
intends
to
review
the
biological
aspects
of
depression
and
antidepressants
. The
research
comprehends
the
main
topics
about
depression
from
recent
journal
articles
,
current
books
on the
topic
of
depression
, and
educational
supplements
from
medical
agencies
concerning
mental
health
and
education
.
